Cannabis can be used to treat a variety of conditions for household cats.
In 2013, 2 Seattle-based veterinarians pioneered the use of medical marijuana for cats. Drs. Greg Copas and Sarah Brandon developed a hemp-based supplement, CannaCompanion which is meant for not just cats, but dogs as well. Cannabis has been used to effectively treat a wide array of symptoms for thousands of use, but in recent times, it has been quite controversial. We hope that not only us as humans can have strong access to the medicine, but for our pets as well.
Manufactured in Washington State, CannaVet is a hybrid of sativa strains and is designed to minimize the high-inducing THC while enhancing medical benefits of the plant. Each capsule contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin B6 and a combination of phytocannabinoids. Each ingredient is found organically in the marijuana plant.
In higher concentrations, THC can be toxic to cats and dogs: Drs. Copas and Brandon do not advocate blowing marijuana smoke towards your pets or to administer medical grade cannabis meant for humans to pets. CannaVet contains less than 0.3% THC and is not intended for human consumption. The extremely low THC makeup of CannaVet might not even have a lasting effect on humans, making it a waste of your money really. With such a low THC makeup, you won’t have to worry about your pet getting the high often sought out by recreational cannabis users. Your pets won’t look or act high, they’ll just get the medical benefits of cannabis.
“We started our product for these older kitties with joint discomfort. They also had histories of FIC (feline interstitial cystitis – as diagnosed by their veterinarians). All responded well regarding their joint aches but the surprise came after 2 months of supplementation: their FIC symptoms resolved. The cats are now more comfortable and their quality of life has improved on many levels, which is all we wanted for them,” Dr. Brandon explained.
CannaCompanion treats a very long list of conditions, but here’s a few of them:
- Reduces cancer-associated symptoms
- Decreases nausea and stimulate appetite
- Aids in decreasing severity of dementia
- Lowers anxiety and increases focus, especially helpful in training sessions
- Supports the immune system for food allergies and immune-mediated diseases
- Acts as a neuroprotective agent which reduces seizure intensity and frequency
- Controls chronic pain and inflamation (arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, etc)
- Reduces bronchial spasms in asthmatics
Medical marijuana for cats is legal everywhere.
Unlike human grade medical marijuana, which is restricted on a federal level and in most US states, CannaVet is considered a supplement by law because of its low THC % and because of the current legal definition of hemp supplements. That means this safe, natural cannabis supplement can be purchased anywhere in the US without worry of legal repercussions. Dr. Brandon is optimistic that it will be commonly available in veterinary hospitals within the next 3 years.
