Scientists for the first time may be able to explain why marijuana can help ease the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease with the results of a new study on mice. Cannabis users have long reported that the drug can help reduce the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. But because there hasn’t been a lot of research on marijuana use, scientists have not had clear information about any possible benefits of the drug. Now, new research has shown that endocannabinoids help control and prevent intestinal inflammation in mice. It may help explain why weed helps people with inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. “There’s been a lot of anecdotal evidence about the benefits of medical marijuana, but there hasn’t been a lot of science to back it up,” said Dr. Beth A. McCormick, vice chair and professor of microbiology and physiological systems at UMass Medical School.
