When Butch Mondeau of Eau Claire mentioned to his wife, Connie, that he wanted to grow hemp as part of Wisconsin’s industrial hemp pilot program this year, her thoughts immediately turned to a different variety of the cannabis plant, marijuana. “I thought he had lost his mind, but I was thinking marijuana,” Connie said. “He explained the program to me, and now I think it’s interesting. Our kids said, ‘Mom, you never got this excited when Dad planted corn or soybeans.’ To me, it’s exciting to be involved in a program this new.” Butch said he saw an article in The Country Today, an Eau Claire-based rural newspaper, about the state’s industrial hemp pilot program early this spring and spent several days thinking about it before he decided to try his hand at growing hemp. “I’m not a big farmer; I’ve only got 23 acres, so if it works, it works.” Late last year, Gov.
