Gov. Herbert announces his opposition to medical cannabis ballot initiative

Herbert released a statement Thursday regarding House Bill 197 – Cannabis Cultivation Amendments and the medical cannabis initiative. “Because our new law, HB 197, promotes medical science and public safety in ways absent from this initiative petition, I will actively oppose the Medical Cannabis Initiative,” Herbert stated in the news release. Herbert signed HB 197, which requires the Department of Agriculture and Food to ensure the cultivation and processing of cannabis in the state for academic or medical research by January 1, 2019. He said legislators worked with his administration “for years” to draft a law that would create a framework for licensed physicians to recommend cannabis for their patients.
